I Landed my DREAM job!!!
Ok, so this may seem a little crazy considering I currently run an Interior Design studio, but hear me out.
Two weeks ago, my life did a Will Smith and flipped 180 (late 80’s babies, you’ll know what I mean!) There I was at my laptop researching wall coverings for a bedroom when I stumbled upon a job vacaam the ncy. As you may know, I started my interior design journey in 2019 after hitting a bit of a cross roads in my life and ever since starting, I’ve been keeping my eye out for a part time job in the industry.
One came up just before Christmas in my local Neptune store but it was full time. I applied anyway just in case they decided they may actually be open to part time staff but I was hit with a very lovely, but disappointing no. If you know me then you know that I believe everything happens for a reason, so I carried on with my studies and work and kept a small eye on any vacancies that may pop up along the way.
My reason for wanting a job in the industry, well my many reasons actually, are firstly that I thoroughly believe that the best way to learn is through hands on experience. I found this out whilst interning a lot throughout my time at university and also through designing for friends and family. The second is that I want to be able to add to my skill set and the third reason is a bit of a selfish one! For seven years I have worked for myself and worked from home and my work and home life have been intertwined. This can be a great thing but it also has its downsides too. I am more than ready to get back out into the world and have a couple of days a week when I’m just Jade and where I can leave my mum duties to my very capable partner in crime. I also am so ready for Christmas parties and work friends!
So anyway, back to last week when I was scrolling through wallpapers. It was late on a Monday afternoon, I had just given the kids their dinner and I was finishing up some work. I found the perfect wallpaper and spotted a little note at the top of the website that said, ‘vacancy.’ Naturally I clicked on it to have a little look and within 10 minutes I’d sent my CV and covering letter off hoping for the best (I am very good and quick at making decisions… even life changing ones!)
If I’m honest I wasn’t even expecting to hear back as I’ve been out of employment for seven years and the vacancy stated that they would only contact you if they wanted to interview you. However, by 9am the next morning, I had an email from the employer asking for a zoom meeting the next day. Holy caboolies!!! I was so excited but at the same time, soooo nervous!!! I hadn’t had an interview since my one at ASOS over 10 years ago so I had a day to swot up on interview questions and what people are looking for these days!
Anyway, the zoom meeting went great. We scheduled an in person meeting the following week and after another very lovely interview, I was told at the end of it that they would love to offer me the job!!!
WOW!!!!
Before I tell you who the job is for and what the job is, I just want to explain that as you study and work in the interiors industry, you soon realise that there are many aspects to it and that you naturally have a bit of a super power subject. Some designers are great spacial planners, whilst others are amazing with soft furnishings or styling.
I have found that my super power is colour and wall finishing. Not only do I feel super passionate about these aspects of interior design and absolutely love them, but I feel as though if you get the base right, the rest of the design will flow beautifully from there.
For this reason, the job couldn’t be more perfect for me and I am thrilled to say that you are now looking at (or reading the words of, but that’s not as catchy) the new showroom colour assistant for LITTLE GREENE!!!!!!!
I am so excited to start my journey with a company I feel so passionately about. As much as I love Neptune, this goes to show that everything really does happen for a reason, I couldn’t have picked a better job for myself if I had tried!! So as of September I will be working at Little Greene for 2 days a week and working on my interior design clients for the remaining 3 days in the week.
So If you have any questions about Little Greene or about paints or wallpapers or colours in general then please do get in touch.
Until next time
Jade xx
